Concrete block doesn't move like wood framing
Most of Clearwater's postwar homes are built with concrete-block walls, which carry load differently than wood framing — any wall coming out needs an engineer's sign-off before a header goes in, not after.
Build a complete scope
- Load-bearing determination for the wall in question
- Engineering, permits, and inspection sequence
- Beam or header sizing and installation
- Electrical and plumbing rerouted around the opening
- Finish and patch work once the opening is framed
Opening walls near the Gulf coast
Hurricane wind-load requirements follow any structural change here, and a block wall opened near Clearwater Beach or the Intracoastal often needs additional bracing that an inland renovation wouldn't.
